In automotive electronics and industrial control circuits, a power resistor must do more than dissipate electrical energy. Operating temperature, insulation performance, overload capability, and connection method can all affect component selection. For applications requiring relatively high power handling and quick connections, a 50W cement resistor can be a practical option.

50W Rated Power Does Not Mean Continuous Full-Power Operation

The SQH(T) series uses a ceramic case and provides a 50W rated power with a resistance range from 1Ω to 3KΩ. Resistance tolerances of ±1% and ±5% are specified in the product documentation.

The load rating also needs to be considered together with ambient temperature and heat dissipation. When the ambient temperature exceeds 70°C, the rated load must be derated according to the specified derating curve.

For engineers selecting a 50W power resistor, the nominal wattage should therefore be evaluated together with the actual operating temperature, installation conditions, and thermal environment.

Short-Time Overload Capability Matters

Automotive and industrial control circuits may experience temporary high loads during startup, switching, or other transient conditions. The SQH(T) series specifies a short-time overload test at 10 times the rated wattage for 5 seconds, with resistance change limited to △R/R≤±2% under the specified test conditions.

This specification can be used to evaluate suitability for defined transient loads. It should not, however, be interpreted as permission to operate the resistor continuously at ten times its rated power.

Temperature and Insulation Performance Should Also Be Considered

The maximum surface temperature specified for the series is 275°C, while the resistance temperature coefficient is ±300ppm/°C. The dielectric withstand test is specified at AC 1000V for one minute, with an insulation resistance of 1,000MΩ.

The environmental specifications also include temperature cycling from -55°C to +155°C for five cycles and a moisture-proof load-life test at 40°C and 95% RH for 1,000 hours.

These test conditions provide useful reference points when evaluating power resistors for demanding automotive and industrial control environments.

Faston Terminals for Quick Connections

The SQH(T) series uses Faston terminals and is specifically described as a cement resistor with Faston terminals for automotive applications. The product documentation also states that the series is AEC-Q200 qualified.

For automotive and industrial control circuits requiring a combination of power handling, ceramic construction, and quick connection, the terminal design should therefore be considered alongside electrical and thermal specifications.
