An anti-burst wirewound resistor is a wirewound resistor designed with a construction intended to control failure behavior under specified abnormal electrical conditions. The KNP-A series uses a ceramic tube construction and is specified as flameproof and anti-burst.

The KNP-A datasheet specifies a Fail-Safe test in which 80–270V AC mains voltage is applied directly. Under the specified test condition, the resistor is required to operate without flame, explosion or arcing.
This characteristic is particularly relevant to power-input circuits. When a resistor may be exposed directly to AC mains conditions, selection should consider not only resistance and rated power, but also the intended failure behavior and flameproof or anti-burst construction.
The KNP-A series uses a ceramic tube anti-burst construction designed for insulation and moisture resistance. Its dielectric withstand test is specified at AC 1000V for 1 minute, while insulation resistance is specified at 1000MΩ minimum.
For industrial power supplies, AC input circuits and applications where electrical insulation is important, these values provide measurable criteria for engineering evaluation. Specific withstand-voltage and insulation-resistance data can be more useful for component selection than a general statement about reliability.
The product specifications also include a 5-times-rated-wattage short-time overload test for 5 seconds. Environmental testing covers temperature cycling from -55°C to +200°C, together with a moisture-proof load-life test at 40°C and 95% RH for 1,000 hours.
These test conditions should not be interpreted as continuous operating ratings at five times the rated power. They are specified test conditions used to evaluate the resistor's behavior under short-term electrical stress. Actual application selection should still consider rated power, ambient temperature and the applicable derating curve.
