Overcurrent Protection in Charger Circuits

Chargers and power electronic equipment may experience abnormal current conditions, including partial short-circuit conditions. For these applications, resistor selection involves more than resistance value and rated power. The protection behavior of the component under abnormal electrical conditions can also be an important design consideration.

The FKN-H series is a fusible wire wound resistor designed to combine resistance functionality with overcurrent protection. According to the product documentation, the series is suitable for half short-circuit applications in chargers, making it relevant to charger circuit protection designs.

Fusing Time Within 60 Seconds

Fusing time is one of the key parameters when evaluating a fusible resistor. The FKN-H specification states that its fusing time is within 60 seconds under the specified test conditions.

The product documentation also states that the required fusing current and fusing time can be consulted between buyers and the manufacturer before production. For charger circuit protection, this allows engineers to consider the required protection behavior together with the actual circuit conditions rather than selecting a resistor based only on its nominal resistance.

Short-Time Overload and Surge Conditions

The FKN-H series also provides a defined short-time overload test condition. The specification lists 10 times the rated wattage for 5 seconds for short-time overload testing.

This parameter can be useful when evaluating resistor behavior in power supply circuits where abnormal conditions may occur for a limited period. In addition, the product documentation describes the series as having anti-surge characteristics according to IEC 61000-4-5, providing a reference for circuit designs involving surge conditions.

Flameproof Insulation and Environmental Performance

The FKN-H series uses a noncombustible insulating coating and is described as solvent-proof and resistant to high temperature. Its environmental test conditions cover a temperature range of −55°C to +200°C, together with temperature-cycle, load-life, and moisture-proof load-life testing.

For insulation performance, the specification gives an insulation resistance requirement of 1,000 MΩ, while the dielectric withstand test is specified at AC 350V for 1 minute. These measurable conditions provide useful technical references when evaluating fusible and flameproof wire wound resistors for charger and power circuit applications.

Key Selection Parameters for Charger Protection

For engineers evaluating a fusible resistor for charger circuit protection, the following parameters should be reviewed:

Selection Item FKN-H Specification
Resistor type Fusible Wire Wound Resistor
Resistance tolerance ±5%
Fusing time ≤60 seconds
Short-time overload 10× rated wattage / 5 seconds
Insulation resistance 1,000 MΩ
Temperature test range −55°C to +200°C
Reference standard JIS C 5201-1

For charger circuits requiring both resistance and abnormal-current protection, the FKN-H series provides a fusible wire wound resistor option with defined electrical and environmental test conditions. Final selection should be based on rated power, resistance value, required fusing current, fusing time, and the actual operating conditions of the circuit.
