Latest company news about How Can Compact PCBs Balance Power and Protection? An Overview of FKN5WS Fusible Wire Wound Resistors

In industrial electronics and power circuits, resistors can serve more than basic functions such as current limiting and voltage division. In certain circuit designs, they can also contribute to protection during abnormal operating conditions. For compact PCB layouts, selecting a resistor that combines power capability with a fusible function requires attention to both electrical and mechanical specifications.

The FKN5WS is a small-type flameproof fusible wire wound resistor rated at 5WS. It offers a resistance range of 0.1–800Ω and is designed for circuit board applications where resistance and fusible protection are required within the same component.

Power Capability in a Compact Design

The FKN5WS has a rated power of 5WS and dimensions of D 6.5 × L 17 × H 38 mm. These specifications provide a practical reference when engineers evaluate available PCB space together with the required power rating.

The product specification also defines a maximum surface temperature of 275°C. For short-time overload performance, the resistor is tested at five times its rated wattage for five seconds, with the resistance change required to remain within the specified limit.

These test conditions can be considered when evaluating whether the component matches the actual load profile of a circuit.

Fusible Function for Circuit Protection

Unlike a conventional power wire wound resistor, the FKN5WS also provides a fusible function. According to the product specification, the fusing test is performed at 16 times the rated wattage, with the fusing time specified as within 180 seconds.

For circuit protection design, this parameter provides a useful reference when evaluating protection behavior. Engineers can consider the expected overload duration, normal operating power and allowable protection response together with the resistance value when selecting a fusible resistor.

Flameproof Coating and Temperature Resistance

The FKN5WS uses a noncombustible insulating coating. The product documentation specifies resistance to solvent cleaning and high-temperature conditions, and the series is UL 1412 approved.

Environmental testing includes a temperature cycle from -65°C to +275°C, while the load-life test is conducted at 70°C for 1,000 hours. A moisture-proof load-life test is also specified at 40°C and 95% relative humidity for 1,000 hours.

These test conditions provide engineering references for evaluating the component in industrial electronic environments.

Key Selection Factors for European and North American PCB Designs

When selecting a compact fusible wire wound resistor for industrial electronics, engineers can focus on four main factors: rated power, resistance range, fusing characteristics and environmental conditions.

The FKN5WS combines a 5WS power rating with a 0.1–800Ω resistance range, a specified fusing time within 180 seconds under the defined test condition, and UL 1412 approval. Actual component selection should still consider operating temperature, load duration, PCB space and the protection requirements of the specific circuit.

For compact PCB designs that require both resistance and protection functions, a small-type flameproof fusible wire wound resistor can provide a practical option for further evaluation.
